It was a huge pain in arse getting through, but Talk Talk have actually done something about speeding up my Internet connection. When I phoned from work, I spent half an hour on the phone explaining the problem and was told I had to speak to the “second line”. They could see that my connection was limited to 2Mb even though it should be 8Mb. But I couldn’t be put through because I had to be calling on the line that had the problem.

When I phoned from home in the evening, I couldn’t be put through to the second line because they were too busy sorting out other people’s problems. They could, however, call me back - any time between 8.30 and 12.30 in the next 48 hours - not much use for those of us who have to go to work.

So I came home one lunchtime and called. And had the misfortune to speak to an operator who refused to put me through to this mysterious second line team because, er, they had arranged to call me back tomorrow. After an intensely frustating 10 minutes of arguing the toss, he eventually put me through and the helpful second line guy magically increased the speed of my line before my eyes.

So, if your TalkTalk connection is slower than it should be, phone them from home and ask to be put through to the second line. They’ll be able to sort you out.

I didn’t say it was going to be an interesting story.
