Government Wants You To Get Safe Online – But Not Us

by Rich on July 31, 2007

Da Government is launched han hinitiative for to get peepol to be safe on da Hinternet. Hit is called “Get Safe Online” innit. Sorry, I will stop that. Anyway, Get Safe Online offers safety tips to people who are new (and old) to the Internet, and encourages business (like LoveHoney to sign up and spread The Good Get Safe Word. At least, that’s what you’d think – but they don’t want help from (sob) people like us.

If you take the trouble (which you won’t) to download the 4.5mb supporter’s pack, you’ll find within the terms and conditions which decree who can and can’t contribute to the great wellbeing of people on the Internet. To wit, excluded are sites which are:

10.3.2 are racist, sexist, homophobic, sexually explicit, abusive or otherwise objectionable

So LoveHoney, being evidently “sexually explicit” isn’t allowed to join. Why is it that we are lumped in with sites that are “racist, sexist, homophobic” or “otherwise objectionable”. Narrow-minded doesn’t even begin to cover it.

We’re also out on account of the exclusion for sites that:

10.3.5 10.3.5 advertise products or services for profit or gain

Which is really odd, but the Alliance and Leicester PLC and the Blackberry Shop are listed as supporters. The last time I looked, the Alliance and Leicester PLC was run for profit or gain – if it’s not, the shareholders should be asking some awkward questions at the next AGM.

Anyway, I’ve written to them to ask them WTF they’re on.
