How to Invent a Sex Toy – Week 6

by Rich on November 20, 2006

In time-honoured fashion, it’s not week 6 because it’s 4 weeks since my last how-to-invent-a-sex-toy post, which itself was 2 or 3 weeks after the previous one. So I’m guessing it’s actually week 11 or 12 of our odyssey to invent a new sex toy in public. And where have we got to? Well, we’re at the packaging design stage.

Our UK middle-man has just returned from a fortnight in China where he briefed the factory that’s going to be making Product X. They know exactly what’s required but have to experiment with some printing because our state-of-the-art product design requires them to do something that they’ve never done before.

In fact, it’s never been done before in the entire world of sex toys, which is very exciting for us – a LoveHoney world-first. When we unveil the finished product (we hope) the sex toy industry will slap its collective forehead and say “Why didn’t we think of that? It’s so obvious!” And, of course, we hope we’ll go on to sell about a squillion of the things.

But anyway, back to the packaging. Our middle-man returned from China bearing two product samples, each in plastic clamshell packaging. The vibe comes in two sizes – small and big. One of the samples doesn’t work and both are the wrong colour, but that’s OK, because we only needed them to design the packaging round.

And this is my first mock-up:

Product X Packaging Mock Up I can tell you’re not impressed. Sorry if you are more than a little underwhelmed. I would be the first to admit that that is not especially good, even as an artist’s impression.

What you are looking it is the clamshell showing where the vibrator will fit at a jaunty angle, and a piece of A4 paper shoved in, with the product name written vertically. The end product won’t have a piece of A4, it will have a piece of card printed in full colour, trimmed to fit the clamshell.

I had to cobble this together it because our designer, Jez, couldn’t understand what I meant by “putting the letters vertically down the front.” He’s an idiot. A talented idiot, but an idiot all the same.

LoveHoney Buzz Tongue Vibrator packaging Jez has done a lot of work for us, including packaging for the LoveHoney Buzz Tongue Vibrator and our Magic Bullet mini vibrator. It’s simple, clean, bright, attractive packaging – it won’t win any awards (we’re not trying to) but it sure beats putting “Fuck your pussy clean” on the bottom of your box.
