How to Invent A Sex Toy – Week I’ve Lost Count

by Rich on January 25, 2007

It’s been a while since I updated our progress with Project X, our ground-breaking new sex toy. That’s not because there haven’t been any developments, it’s because, well, I forgot. Over the past few months, I’ve reported on our progress as we bring a great new sex toy from original idea in Neal’s car to pride of place on LoveHoney’s virtual shelves just. Most recently we’ve been working on the launch promotion for the product, which will involve Picadilly, Circus, Times Square and a 30-second $5 million TV spot in a Superbowl ad break. Or possibly not…

Instead of spunking bazillions trying to buy audience mindshare (TM – ME!) with vanity advertising, we’ve gone for a typically low-cost (but hopefully high key) viral approach with an animated movie.

And before you ask, no, it’s not designed to wind up Apple (more’s the pity, but then the original iBuzz.co.uk animation was never designed to wind up Apple either), it’s more of a homage to some of our favourite science fiction movies, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Goldmember and Apollo 13 (hang on, that one’s not fiction, is it?).

So the idea is that we’ll do a mini-site, similar to the one LoveHoney did for iBuzz Two and wax lyrical about the product’s features and orgasm-packing power, and also showcase the movie. And we’ll whack it up on YouTube as well, like all good Web 2.0 marketeers should.

If people find it funny enough, they’ll tell their friends. If they don’t, we’ll buy a tumbleweed blower. And a skip.

We’re also in discussions with our local Odeon Cinema in an attempt to arrange a red carpet premiere for the animation, though it’s proving hard to find a film that it’s appropriate to show it in front of – Blood Diamond and Rocky Balboa aren’t really on-message for us.

We’ve had the animation made by a super-talented guy. Truly, it is the flat world in action.

He’s a ninja with 3D Studio Max and can produce spinny-rendered animations in double quick time. He also made the iBuzz Two animation which is funky in a cute way, but the animation for Product X absolutely knocks spots off it.

So all we’re waiting for now is someone (me) to write the copy for the mini-site and for the product to actually arrive in our sweaty hands in Bath.

It’s on its way over from China as I type – I just hope it doesn’t get washed up on a beach in Brancombe
